MOVE HOME, NOT MOUNTAINS Let’s be honest - moving home is never going to be a walk in the park. Even if you hire professionals to do the heavy lifting for you, you’re still unlikely to get away without enduring some level of dramatics while you grapple with the memories made within the four walls of your old home. We’ve put together some tips to help you make your move from old to new as stress-free as possible. 1. Don’t allow yourself to leave packing until the last minute. It’s rare that a house move is sprung upon you, so it’s pretty likely that you’ll have been expecting moving day for quite a while. Organisation takes time and planning so make sure you factor in enough to get the job done. 2. Spending a little time labelling bags and boxes to show what is inside without having to rummage can prove really helpful. 3. Keep sandwich bags handy for small fiddly items that could get lost in the move. If you’re dismantling furniture, pop the screws and bolts into one of these and tape it to the furniture to keep everything together. 4. The same goes for wires and cords for electronics. Spool and tape them to the device that they are required for to save yourself heaps of hassle in the long run. 5. Enlist the help of your friends and family when moving but just make sure you return the favour and lend a hand when it’s their turn to up sticks. 6. Sometimes you need professional help. If you have a lot of heavy furniture and bulkier items, shelling out for professional movers can end up saving you a lot of backache as well as heartache. 7. Keeping essential items that you’ll need in the first few days like a change of clothes and toiletries in a separate bag will be one of the nicest things that you can do for yourself when you’re moving house. 8. The right equipment is essential. Old newspapers, bubble wrap, bin bags and boxes will all come in handy for every move, whatever the size. Make use of your suitcases for heavy items like books. 9. Bulky things like cushions and duvets can take up precious space in your moving van. Vacuum bags are wonderful space savers that will help you pack so much more into your vehicle. 10. Make setting up your bed your first job. Moving is exhausting so make sure your bed is ready for you to collapse into when you’re fit to drop and remember tomorrow is another day!
